'The Mummy' faces against Tom Cruise in third and final trailer

Many people do not know it yet, but "The Mummy" will be making a return to the big screen this coming June with Tom Cruise leading the fray. Just recently, Universal released the third and final trailer for the upcoming film, and it is not much different from the previous ones.

In "The Mummy," Tom Cruise stars as Nick Morris who discovers the corpse of an ancient Egyptian princess and later on realizes that what he has uncovered is actually the personification of evil itself. The conflict begins when Nick dies and is resurrected by the mummified princess Ahmanet (played by Sofia Boutella), thus tying his existence to the "ultimate evil."

The franchise itself has three blockbuster films beginning with 1999's "The Mummy" which grossed $415 million on a budget of $80 million and was one of the biggest films of that time. However, films of that scale were considered rare during those times but are fairly common these days. This brings into question how the new film starring Cruise would fare in the box office especially since it would be competing with the likes of "Wonder Woman" which is already being praised by the critics. The previous "Mummy" films relied heavily on the ability to entertain but seeing as there is not much hype surrounding "The Mummy 2017," who knows how the film will perform.

What's also interesting about "The Mummy" is that it will be Universal's first foray into the growing trend of extended universes. Marvel has already done quite an astounding job when it comes to connecting their films and this has certainly brought in large profits to the company. However, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is also a great example of how extended universes can go wrong, critically-wise. So, it is fairly interesting to see how Universal Studios would do when it comes to interconnecting their films especially since "The Mummy" also features Russell Crowe as the iconic Dr. Henry Jekyll aka "Mr. Hyde."

"The Mummy" is set to be released this June 9.
