'The Last of Us 2' release date in 2017? Story line rumors

For those who'd like to get an almost real experience of fighting with zombies — at least in the virtual reality universe, that is — they should consider playing "The Last of Us," and word has it that the game is getting a sequel.

The news was teased by voice actor Nolan North ("Uncharted") during a panel at MetroCon in Tampa, Florida, GameRant reported.

LatinosPost also reported that developer Naughty Dog's LinkedIn profile may have teased that the team is working on a sequel, only confirming the rumors that "The Last of Us 2" is going to happen.

Despite this, there's also the possibility that the developers will not push through with what they've come up with the game, the news outlet noted.

Fans may need to hold their breaths for a little longer because there is still no confirmation on whether or not the most anticipated game sequel is happening, but Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog creative director, told the Official PlayStation Magazine, according to GamesRadar, that he worked with game director Bruce Straley to come up with title ideas.

That didn't stop from speculations on the game's story line to pop up online.

One of the speculated plots was reported in Movie News Guide. It was mentioned that at the final moments of the game, game protagonist Joel will be killed off, while Ellie ventures out on her on.

But of course, none of that has been confirmed by the game creators themselves.

Now, fans are still left with questions, but as reported in GameRant, Naughty Dog has been busy with "Uncharted 4" set to be released in spring next year. The developer usually takes two to three years before releasing another game.

If that pattern is followed, it is expected that "The Last of Us 2" could arrive in 2017 at the very least.

While waiting for more news about "The Last of Us 2," fans just need to feast a little more on the current game, "The Last of Us," available in both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
