'Switched at Birth' season 5 premiere date: Show returns in 2016 with new episodes

Switched at Birth ABC

"Switched at Birth" has been renewed for season 5, much to the delight of the flurry of viewers that follow the drama. ABC Family is proud and is confident of the original series, which, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is one of the network's highest-rating shows.

"Every season Switched at Birth continues to deliver fresh, relatable storylines that tackle important social issues, reflecting what our audience experiences daily," said ABC Family Executive Vice President for Programming and Development Karey Burke said in a statement.

Sharing the same amount of enthusiasm with the throng of fans of the Peabody award-winning drama, Burke said "We're excited to see where Lizzy will take these characters next." "Switched at Birth" season 5 should commence next year, in time for the network's rebranding as Free Form.

Not much is known about what the new season holds but fans should get an idea with what's going down in the future with the "Switched at Birth" season 4 finale, airing tonight. Here, complications and tribulations continue to rise.

Bay has revealed what Eric has become – a fugitive – and Regina is doing her best despite the fact that Will's dad is now on the run and her relationship with Eric could be ruined. In the season ender titled "And Always Searching for Beauty," there should be more chaos but also answers.

Towards the end of the current season, things have become particularly interesting for Bay and her essayer Vanessa Marano knows where exactly her character is headed in "Switched at Birth" season 5.

"Last five minutes of the [season 4 finale] feature the girls in a very different situation than anybody is thinking about. I kind of know where they end up, but I am not entirely sure how they got there though," the actress told Zap2it.

As for Toby and Lilly, it remains a mystery what the latter will decide regarding moving to London with the baby now around.

"Switched at Birth" season 4 finale airs tonight on ABC Family.
