Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) will be behind bars when "Suits" returns for season 6, but it does not mean that his legal career will be over.
After the end of season 5, showrunner Aaron Korsh revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Mike's new situation in prison will make him want to give himself a fresh start.
"He's got to move on and reinvigorate himself and get back on his horse pretty quickly," the showrunner revealed.
Korsh also revealed that Mike's stint in prison may not give him the law degree that he needs in order to return to the law firm, but something unexpected might happen.
"The topic of what happens to him in prison is not in large measure him getting his law degree. That's not what we're focusing on, and we're trying to do something a little different and unexpected. But that's not the focus of Mike's journey in prison. It's more about him surviving and then he has a turn. There are a few twists and turns. But he's not a jailhouse lawyer, so to speak," Korsh revealed.
He also revealed that the first episode of the season could possibly center on how the other members of the Pearson Specter Litt law firm will deal with Mike's imprisonment. According to Korsh, they could contemplate dissolving the firm completely or use the situation to regroup and start fresh.
The showrunner told TVLine that there will be new characters who will be introduced in the upcoming season.
"There's going to be new characters, [a return] to some humor and a new setting," Korsh teased. "Our hope is that new life has been breathed into the show."
The showrunner also mentioned that he recently renewed his deal with Universal Cable Productions for another two years. This means that "Suits" could possibly extend up to season 7 or season 8.
