"Star Trek" fans have got a full year ahead of them come 2016. Not only will the new film, "Star Trek Beyond," come out, but it's also the franchise's 50th anniversary. Now that's something to look forward to.
"Star Trek" has had a loyal fanbase since it first hit the airwaves, spanning generations and seeing the birth of multiple films and television shows. And last week, Trekkies were treated to an early Christmas gift in the form of the first "Star Trek Beyond" trailer.
However, the trailer was not widely accepted by fans. On the contrary, it created a divide. Although some fans loved the sneak peek, others were not too keen on the film's action sequences. Indeed, based on the trailer, "Star Trek Beyond" is looking like one crazy adventure--full of explosions and special effects.
It starts out with upbeat music, then Scotty shows up, comedically asking, "Is that music?" The clip quickly transitions into action scenes and tons of explosions, with the ship flying into space. But it seems like something is going to happen to their ship (crash, maybe?) because Captain Kirk is seen facing a dilemma: he's got no ship or crew. Then scenes of Spock and Bones looking helpless are interspersed with Scotty dangling from the edge of a cliff.
The trailer is certainly action-packed, complete with a motorcycle scene, new faces and a heinous-looking villain.
Although it looks like it has all the makings of a good action movie, fans are not happy with the way it was presented, with most of them saying that "Star Trek" wasn't meant to be an action movie. Some are even dubbing the film as "'Fast and Furious' in space," perhaps taking a jab at the director, Justin Lin, who is known for his work in the "Fast and Furious" franchise.
Simon Pegg, the film's writer (who also plays Scotty), has since weighed in on the issue. While at the European premiere for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," HeyUGuys caught up with Pegg and asked him about the new trailer. Pegg explained that "there's more to it than the action."
Fans will have to take his word for it in the meantime, because "Star Trek Beyond" doesn't hit theatres until July 22, 2016.
