Samsung Galaxy S7 Active release date, leaks: Samsung inadvertently confirms device via its headphones app

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active, the successor of the S6 Active, was accidentally confirmed by Samsung through an app. AT&T

The existence of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active was prematurely confirmed by Samsung Level, a companion app for the company's headphone offerings.

Spotted among the list of devices supported by the app was the unannounced Samsung Galaxy S7 Active, which confirms that the handset will indeed see the light of day.

Checking the app now, Samsung Galaxy S7 Active was taken off the list and so were the rest of the Samsung Galaxy S7 family. This hints that the handset is indeed something Samsung has in store for the future.

Rumors and leaks about the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active started in the past weeks. The device is reportedly codenamed Poseidon and will be a more durable version of the flagship.

The device is imagined to have the same purpose as the rugged Samsung Galaxy S6 Active, which was a water-resistant version of last year's flagship.

However, the Samsung Galaxy S7 already comes with an IP68 rating, which means that it is already resistant to both liquid and dust. This begs the question of what upgrades the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active will offer.

There are speculations that Samsung will go for an IP rating that will make the device resistant to salt water or shock. The handset might also boast longer battery life, which was also a thing for the Active version of the Samsung Galaxy S6.

A more durable build may also be the way to go. Samsung may be using hard buttons on the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active in place of the capacitive buttons on the regular S7 units to complete its rugged look and make it more heavy-duty.

Unfortunately, Samsung is still keeping its lips tight about the device, but with Samsung Galaxy S7 Active all but official, it won't be long before the South Korea-based tech giant unveils it to the world.
