Ethan Chandler broke the hearts of "Penny Dreadful" fans when he unexpectedly left Vanessa Ives alone in season 2, but actor Josh Hartnett revealed that his character did that for a noble reason.

In an interview with Collider, Hartnett revealed that leaving Eva Green's character is the only option left for Ethan so she will not be affected when he pays for all his crimes.

"At the end of last season, Ethan was not purposefully trying to go live his life without Vanessa," the actor explained. "He planned to spare her of the agony of having to see him hung so he slipped away."

The actor also revealed in the interview that at the beginning of the third season, Ethan will be brought back home in the New World so he could finally stand trial to a past crime that he was running away from. But his life will be put in danger because of a number of people who want to see him pay for his crimes. This makes him the most hated person in his hometown next season.

But according to the actor, Ethan could still find solace from several people.

"This season, Ethan is not really looking for a family like so many other characters are. But he finds that there is some place for acceptance with other people," Hartnett said.

The trailer for season 3 showed the interaction between the werewolf-transformed Ethan and Hecate Poole (Sarah Greene), the eldest daughter of witch leader Evelyn Poole (Helen McCrory). Hecate seems to be very excited to see Ethan once again. Will this start an affair between the two? Or will Ethan remain faithful to Vanessa despite their distance?

"Penny Dreadful" season 3 will reportedly feature several new cast additions, including Wes Studi who will portray the role of the mysterious Native American named Kaetenay, who is deeply connected to Ethan.

The season premieres Sunday, May 1, on Showtime.
