'Orphan Black' season 4 episode 7 spoilers: Kendall's death has big impact on Sarah

The Leda clones (Tatiana Maslany) experienced a devastating loss with the death of Kendall Malone (Alison Steadman) in the previous episode of "Orphan Black" season 4, and it seems like more heartbreaks are waiting for the clones this season.

In episode 6, titled "The Scandal of Altruism," Leda's hopes of finding a cure for Cosima's disease vanished when Siobhan's (Maria Doyle Kennedy) mother and the original DNA source of Leda and Castor clones was kidnapped, shot, and burned under the order of the newly unveiled villain Evie Cho (Jessalyn Wanlim). This means that all the Leda sestras are now in a dangerous state.

It was also aggravated when Sarah deliberately wiped out all of Cosima's research and valuable DNA samples when she mistakenly thought that Susan Duncan (Christy Bruce) was their enemy.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, series co-creator John Fawcett explained why Kendall had to die. He said that they had a hard time deciding to kill any of the key characters, but they had to do it.

"Where we thought we had a sure fire answer, now suddenly we don't. In fact, we've got nothing. In fact, we've got less than what we began with," Fawcett said.

Graeme Manson, another series co-creator, said in the same interview that Sarah is not the only one to blame for their big setbacks when she deleted the research since Cosima also has a hand in it.

"They can both take some heat for that. We know that Sarah is rash and makes mistakes. And so does Cosima in this instance. They're the ones that decide to go ahead with this. They're the ones that decide not to tell Siobhan. They own it," Manson said.

Meanwhile, the upcoming episode, titled "The Antisocialism of Sex," will showcase the return of Sarah's old habits as she tries to protect her sisters from the dangerous new enemy.

The official synopsis for the episode reads:

"Sarah, reluctantly return home from her Icelandic hideout to track down an elusive and mysterious ally tied to the clone who started it all — Beth Childs. Sarah will follow Beth's footsteps into a dangerous relationship with a potent new enemy, heading in a horrifying new direction. Under constant pressure to protect the sisterhood and keep everyone safe, Sarah's old habits begin to resurface. As the close-knit sisters are pulled in disparate directions, Sarah finds herself estranged from the loving relationships that changed her for the better."

The episode airs on Thursday, May 26, on BBC America.
