'Marco Polo' season 3 release date, spoilers: fewer Kublai Khan scenes?

Benedict Wong as Kublai Khan Netflix

Speculations about the third season renewal for "Marco Polo" continue to make the rounds online, as Netflix remains mum about the show's fate.

Several rumors claim that the entertainment streaming service provider had to delay the production of "Marco Polo" season 3 because of Benedict Wong's hectic schedule.

The actor, who portrays the role of the Mongol Empire's fifth ruler, Kublai Khan, in the series was cast to portray the role of Wong in the upcoming Marvel film titled "Dr. Strange," which is slated for worldwide premiere on Nov. 4.

The role is reportedly taking a lot of the actor's time, which could mean that his participation in the series might be compromised if Netflix will announce the development of "Marco Polo" season 3.

Other reports claim that Wong's character will be given lesser emphasis in the third installment of the historical drama series. According to rumors, the plot of the series might center on other characters so Wong will not have a lot of screen time next season.

On the other hand, other speculations claim that the mysterious character named Prester John, who was mentioned in season 2, could play a big role in the still-unannounced third season.

In the second season, Nayan (Ron Yuan) and Pope Gregory X (Gabriel Byrne) talked about the character, who reportedly comes from the Magi.

"He's cunning. He's merciless," the Pope told Nayan, as reported by The Wrap. "The Hand of God. His vast army sweeps undetected across the land, leveling faithless villages and cities...Our Crusaders have long prayed to meet him and his army. I've sent emissaries in search of him, but none has ever returned."

Will the explorer Marco Polo (Lorenzo Richelmy) find the location where Prester John resides in season 3?
