It seems that Kickass Torrents (KAT) is back in business, or so it seems. A particular Katcr.to website seems to contain the wide database that the former file-sharing site had.
Fans who are still attached to Kickass Torrents can find some relief with the new website since it has the look and feel of the one that was closed down. The new torrent site will also not ask any personal or financial information if one decides to download files from it. Spam sites that look like KAT have sprouted everywhere for the past two months, as reported by Yibada.
Ever since KAT has been shut down, fans have been on the lookout for alternative websites. Traffic on The Pirate Bay (TPB) and ExtraTorrents have surged ever since KAT has closed down, but they are also battling legal issues of their own. The torrent community is aware that there is also a possibility that these websites will also be hunted by the authorities.
Speaking of TPB, which remained afloat after all these years, the site has celebrated its 13th year anniversary last month in a discreet manner. It was founded back in 2003 by Swedish pro-culture organization Piratbyrån (Piracy Bureau), which aimed to create the country's first public file-sharing network. However, it did not stay within the boundaries of the country and is now an icon in the file-sharing community, according to Torrent Freak.
The publication had the chance to talk to several members of the TPB-crew and shared their thoughts about the site. Spud17 said, "TPB is as important today as it was yesterday, and its role in being the galaxy's most resilient torrent site will continue for the foreseeable future." The member then added, "Sure, TPB has its flaws and glitches, but it's still the go-to site for all our media needs, and I can see TPB still being around in 20 or 30 years' time, even if the technology changes."
Veteran member Xe said during the interview: "TPB ain't perfect. There are plenty of things wrong with it, but it is simple, steadfast and true. So it's no real surprise that it is once more the destination of choice or that it has survived for so long in spite of the inevitable turnover of crew."
For the past few years, The Pirate Bay, ExtraTorrent, and Kickass Torrents were always the top three sites in the community, now, there are only two that remain active.
