How to install Android 5.0 Lollipop on Galaxy S3 through Custom ROM

Samsung Galaxy S3

There is no word from Samsung yet whether it will roll out the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop to the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is turning three years old in March and by the common rules of releasing operating systems, devices that are two years or older are not in the priority list of manufacturers. However, considering that the Galaxy S3 is one of the most popular handsets from Samsung, users are hoping that they will get to lick the sweet taste of the new Lollipop OS.

This can be resolved as a developer found a hack to deliver the new Android OS to Galaxy S3 devices. As reported by AutooMobile, Galaxy S3 users can now update their handsets through Custom ROM.

As per the instructions provided by the tech site, users need to root the device using CWM recovery and unlock the bootloader. They also need to ensure that the PC is installed with all the important drivers as well as with the new Android 5.0 Lollipop for S3, Arter97 Kernel for S3 and CWM recovery.  Those who want to get the new OS are also reminded to make sure that the device has at least 50 percent of battery life and all of the important files are backed up.

They can then follow the step-by-step procedure:  users must first restore the backup from the SD Card backup folder in order to install the ROM.  They must then extract the zip file, copy-and-paste the ROM into their Galaxy S3, then go into recovery mode, after which they need to wipe out all data from the smartphone.  The final step is to restore the copied backup and flash the downloaded kernel.

Autoomobile explains that the latest Android software will bring improvements to the device such as the dual-boot functionality, faster performance, better battery capacity, etc.  However, the Custom ROM only works for Samsung Galaxy S3 model I9300. Also, there are quite a few bugs that developers must fix like sensors and camera not working as well as issues with radio, storage, Wi-Fi, GPS, and screen off.  Therefore, users are warned to make such updates with caution.
