Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) will bring her counterterrorism operations back to the U.S. when "Homeland" returns for season 6, according to showrunner Alex Gansa.

During Deadline's The Contender event held Sunday, the showrunner revealed several information regarding the plot of the upcoming season.

"Homeland will take place on American soil for the first time since season 3," Gansa revealed.

This confirmed earlier reports saying that the show's next location will be in New York City after spending several years overseas. However, he insisted that he cannot provide more details about the plot aside from the continuous theme of the series, which is "How do you balance civil liberties with civil security?"

The showrunner also mentioned that the plot of the upcoming season could be too similar to real-life events. Incidentally, the finale of "Homeland" season 5, which was shot in a subway in Berlin, was filmed several days after the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris back in November 2015.

Meanwhile, Gansa revealed in an interview with LA Times that the backstory of Carrie could be tackled once the series returns for season 6.

According to the showrunner, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) noticed how brilliant Carrie was back in college.

"Clearly she came to the attention of Saul Berenson probably through a professor at some university who picked her out as somebody who was incredibly perceptive and acute about human behavior, somebody who had a razor-sharp mind and somebody who could thrive in the duplicitous role of intelligence work overseas," he explained. "Somebody recognized these gifts and alerted Saul for this fact and she was recruited by him."

While there is no official confirmation yet about the possible discussion of Carrie's past prior to her career in the CIA, viewers of the show could be interested to know how she began working for the agency.

"Showtime" has yet to announce the official premiere date of "Homeland" season 6.
