GoPro Hero 5 release date rumors: Action cam to land before the holidays?

GoPro Hero 4 GoPro

GoPro Hero 5, the next action camera in the GoPro series, just might be out in time for the holidays. Rumors suggest that it might be released before Christmas along with the company's remote-controlled aerial photography device, the Karma drone.

According to Value Walk, Nick Woodman, the CEO of GoPro, said that both the GoPro Hero 5 and the Karma Drone's releases were deliberately postponed, although no reason was given. He also reportedly said that the company will be releasing three devices in a forthcoming holiday season, although he did not specify when exactly this will happen.

Because of the lack of details, many rumors and speculations have surfaced. This is not surprising since many are looking forward to finding out what the action cam company has up its sleeve.

One of the speculations about the Hero 5, according to ValueWalk, is that it will have 4k video capability at 60 frames per second. It is also said to sport dual lens, making it possible to shoot in 3D. The report says it's going to be smaller than the Hero 4 and may be able to go down at water depths up to 60 meters.

In February, CNet quoted Woodman as saying that the Hero 5 is "the most connected and convenient" camera from GoPro. This suggests that it will be more capable than its predecessors when it comes to connecting to smartphones as well as the cloud.

Longbow Research analyst Joe Wittine, meanwhile, predicted that it will have features unique for an action camera, such as 8K resolution, according to BikeRadar. It goes without saying that it will be compatible with the Karma drone.

The Karma ddrone, meanwhile, is said to be backward compatible – that is, it will be compatible with the older GoPro camera models. If this is the case, then owners of Hero 3, Hero 3+, and Hero 4 will also be able to use the drone. In an interview with Engadget early this year, Woodman said the Karma has been designed "to be woven into someone's active lifestyle."

The GoPro Hero 5 and the Karma Drone are speculated to have a September or October release, although this has not been confirmed by the company.
