'Castle' season 8 the last of the series?

"Castle" season 8 brought shocking and heartbreaking episodes when the season started, but the fall finale gave fans the reunion between Kate (Stana Katic) and Rick (Nathan Fillion), which they had hoped for.

Despite pleasing fans with the fall finale episode, it can't be denied that season 8's ratings are not that impressive and that talks of season 8 being the last of "Castle" surfaced.

What future does the series have? Will it get renewed for season 9? Showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter may have hinted that the future doesn't look good for "Castle."

TV Line spoke to Hawley and Winter about the plans for the series in case ABC doesn't pick it up for another season.

Hawley replied that "the reality is that [the network execs] won't make that decision until very late," adding that the plan is to just deliver a "satisfying story and try to wrap up the season in an exciting way."

This isn't the first time that the show is considered for a cancellation. Back in April, TV Line interviewed series creator Andrew W. Marlowe and his wife, also a writer, Terri Edda Miller, both of whom wanted the series to appear as if it has concluded back in season 7's finale.

Winter reminded that Marlowe and Miller's strategy may also be used for the current season. He said, "There's a very good chance that we'll most likely be doing that here. We hope to come back for Season 9, but we have to act as if [we might not]," according to TV Line's report.

"Castle" season 8 is currently on its midseason break and new episodes will air starting on Feb. 1, 2016 with "Tone Death."

In the second half of the season, fans should expect that Kate and Rick will be putting on a show as if they had split, but in reality the two are very much together.
