The fifth and final season of "Bates Motel" is fast approaching, but fans are wondering what is in store for Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) now that his mother Norma (Vera Farmiga) is already dead.

Toward the end of season 4, Norman decided to end his and his mother's life by carbon monoxide poisoning in a jealous fit over Norma's decision to marry Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell). But the sheriff managed to save him before the poisonous fume could completely endanger by his body.

But since Norma is known to be the driving force in Norman's life, it would be hard to imagine how he could manage to run the motel as well as to live day by day now that his mother is gone.

Speaking with Deadline after airing the finale of season 4, executive producers Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse revealed that they already have an idea about where they want the characters to go in "Bates Motel" season 5.

"We have guideposts and we know the destination. How exactly we're going to get there... that's kind of the fun of writing it, and that's what we'll be doing when we get back in the writer's room," Ehrin said.

Highmore, who portrays the lead character in the series, will also rejoin the other writers of the show for the upcoming season. According to the actor, the writers will make sure that viewers of the series will realize that Norman and the other characters still have a chance to avoid their inevitable fate before their full-on descent into madness.

"I don't think the writers necessarily see the show ending with Marion Crane pulling up to the house and it being like, 'Norman's arrived,' you know? There's certainly this openness as we get towards next season of moving past events in Psycho, or there's that fluidity with the storytelling," Highmore stated.

"Bates Motel" season 5 is expected to premiere on A&E in March 2017.
