Xbox One backward compatibility news: 'Halo Wars,' other classics expand game list

Fresh from adding at least three new classics last week, Xbox One has once again expanded its backwards-compatible game list with three new titles.

According to a tweet from Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, Xbox One fans can now play "Halo Wars," "Soul Calibur II," and "King of Fighters '98" on the current-gen console.

The list continues to grow with the additions. Just last week, separate releases saw the rollout of "Dark Void," the original "Assassin's Creed" game, and "Tekken Tag Tournament 2." Meanwhile, prior to the global release of the new "Dark Souls III" role-playing title, its original "Dark Souls" installment has been made available for the Xbox One via backwards compatibility.

This is in addition to the bundle bonus already announced by publisher FromSoftware. Those who have pre-ordered digital copies of "Dark Souls III" will automatically get "Dark Souls" for their Xbox One library.

Those who are new to the program may be curious as to why there has been a wave of new releases of backwards-compatible games lately. Microsoft previously changed its schedule for the Xbox One feature. When the backwards compatibility program started, Microsoft released new titles for the game list monthly. However, the roadmap has been changed. Now, Xbox One-compatible classics get added to the backwards compatibility game list as soon as they are released by their publishers.

Meanwhile, aside from the backwards compatibility changing its schedule to suit player preferences, Microsoft continues to check out other areas to expand its Xbox One programs and features. According to Inquisitr, Microsoft recently sent a survey to its fans, and one of the questions has something to do with digital trade-ins. Microsoft is planning a digital copy trade-in program, where each title will have a 10 percent rebate for future purchases.
