WWE rumors 2016: Kevin Owens to defend intercontinental title at WWE Fastlane

Kevin Owens recently became the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Intercontinental champion once again, thanks to the match booked by Stephanie McMahon.

The move was obviously something done to spite Dean Ambrose as the Lunatic Fringe focuses on a new goal — to get a world title shot at Triple H's WWE heavyweight belt.

Ambrose will be in the main event of WWE Fastlane this coming weekend to try fend off friend Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar to get that seed into WrestleMania 32 this coming April.

As far as Ambrose is concerned, the triumph which happened when he pinned Dolph Ziggler in a Fatal Five-Way match will be something interesting as well. With the intercontinental title now involved in a different storyline, it will be interesting if this will stick or just a tactic to be held back to see what comes out of the upcoming WWE pay-per-view (PPV).

Right now, Ambrose seems to have abandoned any plan to retake the title, with Owens defending the title against Ziggler this weekend. Will Owens be successful and keep that title under his waist?

Owens is seen as someone who can be a big star if given the proper boost. His heel character has been murky, although he has proven that to be a hit with the WWE fans despite the chorus of boos.

Against Ziggler, Owens has good chances, although the Showoff may pull off a surprise. Between the two, Owens could make something out of the title by feuding with Ziggler or anyone else in the locker room. In short, he can carry that storyline perfectly if the WWE allows it.

So, is it the end between Owens and Ambrose? As mentioned earlier it will all depend on the Lunatic Fringe's fate this coming Sunday. If he loses, he could divert his attention back to the title he never really lost since Owens pinned Ziggler and not him.

Either that or Ambrose goes on a rampage to make a case to get himself into the WWE heavyweight title picture.

For Owens, losing the title to Ziggler may place him in a position where his rise could be in question. Except for the WWE NXT championship, he has never held any major WWE title longer than usual; losing it so soon again could be catastrophic to his credibility.
