It's been four months since viewers last saw "Wayward Pines" season 1 finale and as the year approaches its end, there's still not a definitive announcement if the show has been renewed or cancelled. Despite this, many continue to hope and speculate that the TV series would return for another installment.
Based on an assessment by TV Line, the show is categorized as not cancelled. Although FOX has not made an official announcement regarding the matter, "Wayward Pines" had an impressive rating with its first season, so it's easy to assume that the show would see a renewal.
Back in the finale episode, protagonist Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) sacrificed his life in order to save the residents of the town dominated by the Abbies. At the end of the episode, Ethan's son, Ben (Charlie Tahan), wakes up from a hospital and discovers that Wayward Pines is different from how it was and is ruled by The First Generation.
With this cliffhanger episode, it's inevitable that fans would want more from the story, but that's just how it's supposed to be, according to showrunner Chad Hodge.
In his interview with Give Me My Remote, Hodge explained that "Wayward Pines" is intended as a one-season show only.
"As you know, even though the book ending and show ending leave you wanting more, that was always the design. I think leaving the audience wanting more is a good thing. It doesn't necessarily mean you need to do a second season," Hodge said.
The showrunner also shared that no official conversations have taken place between writers and the network but there were "preliminary conversations" due to the high ratings.
Although "Wayward Pines" series is based on the book of the same name by Blake Crouch, they are two separate entities and both featured different endings. Hodge highlighted that the show introduced the First Generation, which was not found in the books but was part of the series that made it more interesting.
With that said, the First Generation is speculated to be the center of the plot if "Wayward Pines" gets renewed for season 2. In the meantime, nothing's official at this point, but more updates should pop up in the coming months.
