Twenty-eight years after the release of the first "Wasteland" game and two years after its successful sequel, "Wasteland 2," game developer inXile Entertainment announced that they are making "Wasteland 3."

"The game will be set in the savage lands of frozen Colorado, where survival is difficult and a happy ending is never guaranteed," the press release says, as reported by Kotaku. "Players will face difficult moral choices and make sacrifices that will change the game world," the statement added.

According to the report, the announcement was made through Fig, a crowdfunding website where inXile hopes to raise $2.75 million to fund the game's development.

Gamers will take on the role of the only survivor of ranger squad Team November. In the midst of warring factions, they will have to survive in sub-zero temperatures and build their lives from scratch. They will be faced with choices that will affect how the game proceeds, with various areas to explore and missions to accomplish. The decisions they make, such as which factions to befriend, can either save or destroy the land.

Described as "a party-based role-playing game," "Wasteland 3" will give players the option play solo or play with a friend. The single-player mode can be played offline, and, in the co-op mode, one gamer can play even if their friend is not online. However, one's choices and actions can affect the story of their partner.

"We're going to have a [expletive] blast with it," inXile head Brian Fargo told Polygon. "And it's not just solving puzzles together. It's about narrative multiplayer and what can happen when the two of us are in a world, independent of each other, doing other things on the map."

The first "Wasteland" game, released in 1988, was the basis for the highly successful "Fallout" series. "Wasteland 2" was released in 2014. The launch date of "Wasteland 3" has yet to be announced, but inXile will start its crowdsourcing campaign on Fig on Oct. 5. It will be developed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC, Mac, and Linux.
