The United States got their Gold Cup campaign off to the perfect start with an opening game win over Honduras. They now face the supposed minnows of the group, Haiti, indwell be expected to cruise to a comfortable win.
However, Haiti should not be written off too easily and the United States must ensure that they still put in a solid day's work at the office. Haiti were able to gain a first game draw with Panama, which surprised many, who had thought Panama would also cruise to an easy three points.
Haiti showed that they have some skilled players and are determined enough to make life difficult for opposition teams. They no doubt will be hoping to do the same tonight against the United States and if they come away with anything from this game they will be celebrating.
The USA will be looking to improve on their performance against Honduras. Even though they got the three points, and overall it was a job well done, they know there was a lot of areas they need to improve upon for their future games.
Honduras looked like the more dangerous teams for large parts of the opening game with the USA, as the United States were unable to open up to play free flowing soccer. They relied on two set piece goals from Clint Dempsey to get the three points, and they will be hoping to put together a much more complete performance against Haiti today.
Some fans may remember that Haiti and the USA played in the 2009 Gold Cup, and Haiti were even 2-1 up late on before the United States were able to salvage a draw late on. A look closer shows that the USA did not field their strongest side for that game, but still, it could serve a good lesson for today's team not to take Haiti easily as they would like nothing more than to steal some points from this game against the supposed tournament favourites.
