It has been more than a year since season 2 of "True Detective" which was marred by its storytelling that just did not compare to the show's original iteration. Most fans assumed that this would spell the end for the franchise. However, the latest comments from HBO's programming president Casey Bloys quashed rumors as he revealed that they are still working on anthology series.
In an in-depth conversation with Entertainment Weekly that started with the renewal of HBO's newest hit, "Westworld," the media outlet also asked the executive about their other properties including the police anthology. Despite not being able to offer any specific information about the tipped third season, he kept the hope alive for fans saying that they are still actively developing the Nic Pizzolatto-created show.
"They're thinking about ideas, and when they find something, that's when I'll hear from them. I don't have anything to report on either of them other than they're thinking about what the best-next version is," Bloys said.
This is not the first time that Bloys has been optimistic about a supposed "True Detective" season 3. Back in July, he announced that the anthology was in progress in terms of honing the right story for the series. And it seems like HBO is not planning on rushing Pizzolatto again, something that they admitted doing which ultimately resulted in a less than terrific outcome for its sophomore season.
"It is not dead," Bloys revealed during the Television Critics Association press tour in July. "I talked to Nic about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don't think Nic has a take and he's working on some other projects. We're open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It's a valuable franchise, it's not dead, we just don't have a take for a third season yet."
When the former head of programming Michael Lombardo stepped down from his post earlier this year, the guessing and waiting game for "True Detective" season 3 started as it was him who was very supportive of the idea. But with Bloys seemingly adamant about the continuation of the anthology, the most important question remaining now is when the upcoming installment will eventually see the light of day.
