Signs are pointing towards the return of "True Detective" on HBO, as A-list stars continue to drop hints about the possibility of joining season 3.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, season 1 lead star Matthew McConaughey admitted that he already misses playing his character Rust Cohle in the critically acclaimed anthology crime drama.

"I miss watching him on Sunday nights," the actor said.

However, the actor wants to see the material first before agreeing to reprise his role as the detective who hunted a serial killer from the Louisiana State Homicide Unit.

"It would have to be the right context, the right way," McConaughey said. "That thing—when I read [the original script] I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rustin Cohle, I'm in."

But McConaughey was not the only actor who talked about the third season of "True Detective."

On Instagram, "X-Men: Apocalypse" star Olivia Munn posted a photo with the caption "True Detective Season 3 #officexmasparty." This led to speculations that the actress will be part of the cast in its third installment. However, both HBO and Munn's camp have yet to confirm if the casting speculations are true.

While the first season of "True Detective" was highly applauded by the critics, the second season, which starred Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch received unfavorable response from critics and viewers. This dimmed the possibility of bringing back the show for season 3.

Early this year, HBO president Michael Lombardo admitted in another interview with Vanity Fair that he should be the one to blame for the failure of season 2 because he rushed series creator Nic Pizzolatto to come up with a new story.

"I set him up to deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver," Lombardo said. "That's not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse. And so I think that's what I learned from it. Don't do that anymore."
