There have been many rumors circulating around the Internet regarding the third season of the "Tokyo Ghoul" anime, although it still remains to be seen if any of them hits the mark.
Material-wise, there seems to be enough in the manga to be adapted into a new anime season. "Tokyo Ghoul" has 143 chapters, and "Tokyo Ghoul:re" has, so far, 94 chapters. Season 1 of the anime covered around 60 chapters, so there's more to go on with.
While Season 1 was rather faithful to the manga, all of those chapters were compressed into only 12 episodes, so a lot of plot points were skipped. One fan called the Aogiri arc "quite butchered." It ended with Ken finally accepting that he is half-ghoul.
The second season of the anime called "Tokyo Ghoul √A," meanwhile, ended with Ken facing Arima and Touka Kirishima opening a new café. Fans will recall that this season had an original plot, one that deviated from the story written by mangaka Sui Ishida. Because Studio Pierrot reportedly received criticism from fans due of this move, many believe that "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 will be more faithful to the manga.
It remains to be seen at which point in the manga would season 3 start from, and there are several theories that have arisen as to where that would be. One of the events believed to be featured in "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 is Ken Kaneki suffering from amnesia. In the manga sequel, he completely forgets who he is and assumes the identity of Haise Sasaki. As Sasaki, he heads the Quinx Squad, a team of CCG investigators that underwent procedures to gain the special abilities of Ghouls in order to fight them.
Another speculation, according to iTechPost, is the death of Arima. Yibada also reported that the season might feature Touka as she enters college and tries to live alongside humans. It is speculated that the next season would explore her rage against Ken.
For now, fans will have to wait until the people behind "Tokyo Ghoul" announces season 3. So far, there is no air date announced.
