The upcoming third film about the god of thunder's adventure may have found its helmer. Academy Award-nominated film director Taika Waititi is reportedly in talks with Marvel to direct "Thor: Ragnarok," the third film that centers on the Mjolnir-wielding hero from Asgard.
The news came from the Wrap, which got the word from "an individual with knowledge of the situation." The site reports that Ruben Fleischer, who directed "Zombieland," was also in the running, as well as Rob Letterman and Rawson Marshall Thurber, but the bid was ultimately won by Waititi.
The new "Thor: Ragnarok" director is known for his short film "Two Cars, One Night," which earned him a nomination in the Academy Awards. He was also a co-writer and co-director in the horror comedy film "What We Do in the Shadows," which was released last February.
"Thor" movies were helmed by different directors. Kenneth Branagh directed the first one. There were even rumors that he will be back in the director's seat for the upcoming film, but the speculations had been shut down by Marvel head Kevin Feige long before news about Waititi's involvement came to light.
Alan Taylor directed the second film, "Thor: The Dark World." Waititi, meanwhile, is the latest "head-scratcher" hire for Marvel, as The Hollywood Reporter puts it. Telegraph says that he is an "unlikely" choice to helm a big blockbuster spectacle such as "Thor" but is nonetheless an exciting pick.
"Thor Ragnarok" chronicles the Norse apocalypse. Ragnarok is defined as the end of Asgard and its renaissance, and this will be the center of the movie. In it, Thor will reportedly try to save the people in his home and work on stopping such deadly cycle for good.
Chris Hemsworth will be back as the superhero. Jaimie Alexander has also confirmed her return to the franchise as Lady Sif. Fan-favorite Loki, who is played by Tom Hiddleston, is also set to return.
"Thor Ragnarok" hits the theaters on July 28, 2017.
