The latest episode of NBC's popular drama series "This is Us" season 2 brought another heart-wrenching sequence to the viewers. The show has been known to offer tear-jerker scenes since the first season, but this week's episode discussed a harrowing reality among families: miscarriage.

As recapped by the Huffington Post, Kate (Chrissy Metz) had lost her baby in last week's episode titled "Number One," which came as a shocker for the fans who were rooting for Kate to build a happy family with her fiancé, Toby (Chris Sullivan). The aftermath of Katy's miscarriage was then featured in the latest episode, "Number Two," in which the couple is seen trying to find ways to accept the harsh reality.

The recent tragedy in "This is Us" season 2 could be a huge blow to Kate and Toby's relationship, although this could also be an opportunity for the two to test their strength. In "Number Two," Kate tries to be composed in spite of what happened, like going to lunch with her friends. Deep inside, Kate is still agonizing, and it is a good thing that Rebecca (Mandy Moore) came to comfort her. On the other hand, Toby is still coping with what happened to the baby, and it looks like he would need more time to take the bitter details in.

Prior to this week's episode, Entertainment Weekly was able to get a phone interview with Metz for her thoughts about Katy's loss. According to the actress, her character's miscarriage in "This is Us" season 2 is a good way to raise awareness among the viewers. Each person has his or her own way to deal with this sad truth, but as what the show is trying to tell with Kate and Toby, the miscarriage could be way to bring their relationship "to a new level."

Metz also revealed that she knows a family member and friends who experienced what her character in "This is Us" season 2 has been going through. The actress has also done some research about the implications of miscarriage to a person. As for Kate, she revealed that her character is blaming herself for losing the baby, while the truth is that the miscarriage is no one's fault.

A new episode of "This is Us" season 2 will air next Tuesday at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
