'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers: Nina Dobrev, more familiar faces expected to be part of show's end

Will Nina Dobrev return as Elena in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8? Annette Brown/The CW

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 will be the supernatural hit show's ending. This means that it will be the last time fans will see the wonderful and wicked folks of Mystic Falls, but this also means they will see Elena Gilbert again.

When former cast member Nina Dobrev left the series after playing the female lead in the first six seasons, she promised executive producer Julie Plec that she will be back to be part of the show when it wraps up.

The year has come for this promise to come to fruition, following the announcement at the San Diego Comic Con or SDCC that "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 will end the show.

Plec's original plan was to bring Dobrev's character back into the scene when the show concludes. Back in May, she said that she is intent in pushing that through if Dobrev is still willing to do it.

During an interview with TV Line, Plec sent a message to Dobrev and reminded her of the "emotional promise" they made when she left "The Vampire Diaries."

"Not to put too much pressure on anything Nina Dobrev, but a promise was made. An emotional promise that I'd like to see come to life," Plec said, adding that they will have to wait and see if the promises made can be delivered.

Knowing Dobrev, the EP expects the star to honor her word. At the SDCC panel of the series, she said that "it would be a real tragedy if we couldn't bring that story back around full-circle."

That being said, fans can expect Plec to do everything in her power to have Elena be part of the story in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8. However, Dobrev's character won't be the only one possibly returning to Mystic Falls.

Plec also stated that Elena will just be one of the many characters she wants to bring back. One former cast member she wants to return is Taylor Kinney, who played Mason Lockwood.

There were also mentions of Sheriff Forbes played by Marguerite MacIntyre and John Gilbert, the villain from the first two seasons played by David Anders.

"There's a lot of people we loved as characters on the show... and this is a year about celebrating what the series has been and what it has felt like to be together and love these characters," Plec said.

"We will find interesting and creative – whether it's through memory or flashbacks or some other surprise – ways to just say hello and goodbye to those characters," she went on to say.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 premieres Friday, Oct. 21 on The CW.
