As "The Vampire Diaries" goes on a short break, the eighth and final season of the show takes a much-needed breather from the dark narrative that the supernatural series is currently treading. This also gives fans some time to recalibrate their theories as to how The CW show might probably end because, at this point, it appears that every road is leading to hell.
Aside from the Siren being the big baddie of the installment, the addition of "The Vampire Diaries'" version of hell with its own devil in Cade (Wolé Parks) seems a bit too much for the show's heroes. However, creator Julie Plec is looking at it in a different way, saying that whatever is currently happening is a way to wrap up the eight years of the fantasy series in a way that is of service to both the characters and the fans.
"There's this sense of finality that we needed to accomplish this year which meant that characters that we've introduced and loved over the years, even the series regulars, had a journey that had to come to an end," Plec told Entertainment Weekly in a recent chat, referring to the kind of narrative they want to convey this last time. "As we ask the question, 'What does hell mean?' and eventually ask the question, 'Does peace exist?' — that question will exist for each and every one of our characters. Now I'm not saying you're going to watch them all die on camera, but the question is going to exist for everybody."
Speaking of hell and everything evil, half of the Salvatore brothers, Damon (Ian Somerhalder), is still wreaking havoc in "The Vampire Diaries." With the show dwindling down to the final episodes before ultimately wrapping up, fans are worried that the more time he spends in his dazed state, the less likely that will have a happy ending.
On that matter, Plec offered a bit of solace revealing that at a time when all hope seems lost, he will still at least have a portion of his humanity fighting to be back on the light side. It also provides a great entry point for Elena (Nina Dobrev) in what could be a last-ditch effort to save her lover. The only question, however, is whether Damon's sheer determination will be enough to bring him back or not.
"The Vampire Diaries" will be back next week, Dec. 2, with the episode titled "Detoured On Some Random Backwoods Path to Hell" directed by Paul Wesley.
