The Mindy Project has tickled the viewing public for two seasons, and many can't wait for the series to begin its third on Sept. 16. For one, Mindy's fans can expect some rivalry as Niecy Nash steps in as a new doctor in the series.

According to TV Line, Nash will play the character Dr. Jean Fishman, a no-nonsense physician from Boston who will be the new chief at the Shulman and Associates admitting hospital. Nash is well known as Didi in the comedy series Getting On, and as Lolli Ballantine in The Soul Man. She also played Deputy Raineesha Williams in Reno 911!

Award-winning actress Rhea Perlman will also join the cast in the third season, playing the role of Annette, the mom of Mindy's love interest, Danny Castellano (Chris Messina). Annette's presence in the show will certainly make life complicated for the characters in the series - as Perlman told reporters, Mrs. Castellano will clash with both Mindy and Danny.

The 66-year old veteran actress is best remembered for her role as Carla Tortelli in Cheers.

Followers of the series can keep on guessing what mischief and tight spots the OB/GYN will get into. The first episode is called "We're A Couple Now, B****s" written by Mindy Kaling, while the second one is entitled, "Crimes and Misdemeanors and Ex-Boyfriends" written by Matt Warburton. The third is said to be "Annette Castellano is My Nemesis".

"Mindy believes she got her fairytale ending when the two (Mindy and Danny) reunited atop the Empire State Building," Fox states on its website. "But did she? Season Three will continue to explore her and Danny's romantic and professional relationship."

The series will air on Fox on Sept. 16, 9.30 p.m. EDT.
