Post-apocalyptic dramas have become a popular theme in the TV industry and another one has been renewed for a third season.

TNT's "The Last Ship" has been given a go for another season with new cast joining the show.

The finale episode for season 2 wrapped up with an open-ended story, which is a perfect way to close the season and fit for an introduction to season 3.

The final scenes from the finale episode showed Dr. Scott (Rhona Mitra), the hope to finding a cure for the devastating plague, seriously injured and struggling to survive.

The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that showrunners Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane made the storyline on Dr. Scott's situation "purposely ambiguous" just to keep the viewers' interested in the show, especially for the third season.

Kane explained in the interview with the media outlet that they intentionally offered viewers the idea that it's not the end of the show and that characters will face more problems and challenges along the way.

The previous seasons featured the beginning of the plague and how it almost wiped out the entire civilization.

As the show moves forward, it was revealed that season 3 will focus more on "rebuilding the America and putting the world back in order," as Kane put it.

Joining the mission of rebuilding the nation are "Law & Order" veteran Elisabeth Rohm and "Jane the Virgin's" Bridget Regan, who have been cast as season 3 regulars.

According to Deadline, Rohm will portray the super intelligent Allison Shaw, serving President Michener's (Mark Moses) chief of staff.

On the other hand, Regan will take the role of former Navy intelligence officer, Sasha, who will be working under diplomatic cover in China for the renewed U.S. government, a separate report from Deadline stated.

As for the release date, fans will just have to wait for the announcement on the premiere date for the post-apocalyptic drama, although Latin Post reported that the show will likely return sometime in June or July 2016.
