While Naughty Dog has yet to confirm a sequel for its hit game "The Last of Us," it is said that "The Last of Us 2" is likely to be in development already, with the game debuting at the E3 2017.

According to speculations, even if "The Last of Us 2" will get delayed to 2018, it will most likely release during the earlier part of the year, like how the original "The Last of Us" launched in June 2013. This means that developer Naughty Dog will have to announce and make the sequel official in a big industry event. This makes an E3 2017 announcement for "The Last of Us 2" highly possible.

Meanwhile, although speculations suggest that development on "The Last of Us 2" is already underway, Naughty Dog has yet to confirm details. There are supposed leaks and hints though, that point out the game is already in the pipeline. Previously, Naughty Dog is said to be hiring game designers for a new, big game project. There are also supposed Easter eggs about "The Last of Us 2" in Naughty Dog's current project, "Uncharted 4."

As for what "The Last of Us 2" will be, it is said that it may be a continuation of the original title, since the game left many questions and cliffhangers for fans. Speculations suggest that the sequel will pick up where the "The Last of Us" game left off, only this time, Ellie will be all by herself in scouring the post-apocalyptic wastelands and trying to find the cure to the virus. There are rumors that the sequel will open with Ellie confronting Joel about her rescue, which the latter instigated without her knowledge, as Joel learned that in order to come out with a possible cure, Ellie has to die. As with the original game, Ellie will also be central to the story, since "The Last of Us" built up her supposed immunity to the virus.
