Following a successful first week, "The Handmaid's Tale" has been renewed for a second season that will be making its debut in 2018.

"The Handmaid's Tale" is an adaptation of Margaret Atwood's novel. It involves the life of people in a totalitarian society called Gilead, which was originally part of the United States.

It is to no surprise that Hulu would not hesitate. In their Upfront presentation, Hulu mentioned that "The Handmaid's Tale" is such a success that it has gained more viewers than any other series that can be found on Hulu. This comparison includes original series and series they have acquired from different channels.

The idea of a TV series adapting the novel of "The Handmaid's Tale" has been around for years, but was only developed once Hulu and its partner, MGM Television, came to an agreement.

According to Rolling Stone, the sale of Atwood's novel increased by 200 percent from the previous year since President Trump was elected. According to "The Handmaid's Tale" lead star, Elisabeth Moss, the reason for the book and show's high success is because of the current situation of women's reproductive rights in the United States. Although, the production of the show began before the country knew who would be elected as their next president.

"The Handmaid's Tale" series does not follow the novel completely. Atwood approved certain changes that would make the series more relatable in today's modern time. One of the big differences that was included in the series was having people of color on the show; meanwhile, in the book, people of color were banned from the society.

With all the current issues plaguing the United States, "The Handmaid's Tale" provides a certain kind of entertainment that will have viewers open their eyes to some of the main issues faced today.

"The Handmaid's Tale" season 1 is available on Hulu.
