Tesla promo: Tesla's referral program gives away a free Model X

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced during a conference last Wednesday that the company is experimenting with a referral program that aims to boost its sales just by word of mouth.

The referral program, which runs until Oct. 31, should slash $1,000 off the price tag of Model S for new buyers who received a referral link from existing Model S owners, as reported in Mashable.

Musk said in an email addressed to Tesla owners that selling the Model S through a store could incur additional $2,000.

To cut cost of selling the car in a Tesla store and to increase sales, the promotion was set up in the hopes of reducing the amount of physical stores that need to be opened.

"If we can amplify word of mouth, then we don't need to open quite as many new stores in the future," the email stated.

The cost saved will be given back to the customers. Current owners will be sent with a custom referral link, which makes it just similar to usual referral programs found online.

The $1,000 discount from Tesla will not only be the bonus given to customers: anyone who can get five people to buy a new Tesla will have the chance to visit Tesla's Gigafactory, the company's new battery plant based in Nevada, as well as an invite to its opening party.

Furthermore, anyone who can convince ten people to buy a new Tesla will get the opportunity to buy the Founder's Series Model X, with a $20,000 discount, reports stated.

The deal gets more exciting: the first person in their region to get 10 customers to buy a new Tesla will get a free Model X — the fully-loaded version.

As mentioned, the experimental program will last until Oct. 31 this year and applies to buyers of new cars. However Musk said that the date may extend and the referral may also apply to used Tesla models if the program proves to be a success.
