"Supergirl" officially soars onto the small screen tonight and TV buffs would finally get to meet another superhero from the DC Comics universe in the form of Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin from Krypton who escaped the planet on the brink of its destruction.
Days prior to the much-awaited and heavily hyped premiere, CBS released a slew of sneak peeks constantly teasing fans about what they are in for in the upcoming action-adventure drama and how "Glee" alum Melissa Benoist looks like as a superheroine that could basically lift an airplane with people in it.
Media outlets are worried about how "Supergirl" will perform despite the big marketing efforts. Carter Matt says it all comes down to the casting. Like Benoist, Grant Gustin, who plays The Flash in the successful CW series of the same name. Before the series started, it was said he doesn't fit the bill and TV Line can now say the naysayers were wrong.
While it is uncertain if Benoist will share the same fate (there are already wet blankets here and there as expected) but as per the aforementioned publication, the star already embodies the high spirits of Kara Zor-El, which is always a good start.
More than that, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg explains why the actress is perfect for the role. "The minute you meet her you fall in love with her. Her laugh, her smile, her positivity. When it's 4 in the morning and everyone on the set is tired, you hear gales of laughter and it's always her," the EP told New York Post.
In the pilot episode of "Supergirl," Kara Zor-El, who, by day, works for a very demanding boss, will be seen in the final moments of her struggle in keeping her superpowers. For 12 years, Kara concealed her abilities from anyone and it looks like only her human sister knows about her ability to deflect bullets and take wing.
It wasn't until her human sister gets in grave danger that she decides that what she has can save people. In the sneak peeks and trailers, Kara's superhuman strength is overlapped by how adorable she becomes just gushing over being in the news for helping an airplane land to safety.
