The long wait for fresh episodes of "Sherlock" will be over as BBC officially confirmed that the cameras have begun to roll for season 4.

According to the network's press statement, "Sherlock will return to screens with three brand-new episodes promising laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases."

The network also revealed that the premiere episode for the upcoming season will center on the return of the impulsive detective Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) to Britain. Meanwhile, Sherlock's loyal friend Doctor Watson (Martin Freeman) and his wife Mary (Amanda Abbington) prepare to welcome their first child.

The premiere episode will be helmed by filmmaker Rachel Talalay, who also worked as director for several notable TV series such as "Doctor Who" and "The Flash." Series co-creator Mark Gatiss is also confirmed to have written the script for the first episode.

Gatiss and series co-creator Steven Moffat revealed that they are excited to begin the new season of "Sherlock." According to the series co-creators, "Sherlock series four - here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street - and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax."

Could this mean that the end of the series is right around the corner?

Meanwhile, former "Doctor Who" actor Daniel Hoffmann-Gill announced via Twitter that he will appear as a guest star in "Sherlock" season 4. However, the actor did not specify what role he is about to portray in the series.

"Sherlock" season 4 is slated to return to BBC in 2017.
