'Sherlock Holmes 3' release date: Cast members clearing their schedules for filming at the end of 2016

 Warner Bros.

The production of "Sherlock Holmes 3" is still a go despite the cast members' very hectic schedules.

Nearly five years after Warner Bros. Pictures announced that they were planning to create another "Sherlock Holmes" movie with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law in the lead roles, updates about the film's production have begun to emerge on several media sites.

Downey himself talked about the status of the film in an interview with Shortlist, saying that he and filmmaker Guy Ritchie were in constant communication to discuss the third installment in the "Sherlock Holmes" franchise.

"If we could shoot it on Skype, we could have the whole [movie] done in a week," the actor stated. "When we're making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. [So] we'll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I'm tired all the time, but I'm so excited about it."

Producer Joel Silver also confirmed that the movie's production will take place before the year ends.

"It looks like it could happen this fall. Downey said he wants to do it. He's gotta launch into another Avengers movie, right after the New Year, so we're trying to get it done," the producer told Collider in May. "We have a script that we like. Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we're hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we'll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now."

This means that both Downey and Law will take some time off from their very busy schedules to work on the continuation of the "Sherlock Holmes" movie franchise after the commercially successful 2009 film and its equally blockbuster hit sequel, the "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" released in 2011.
