The third season of The CW's "Reign" just aired its premiere episode on Oct. 9 and days before that, showrunner Laurie McCarthy dropped a huge spoiler bomb about the show.

McCarthy exclusively talked to Entertainment Weekly and gave the confirmation about what many viewers of "Reign," especially those who are rooting for Francis (Toby Regbo) and Mary (Adelaide Kane), have always dreaded: King Francis will meet his death this season.

An exclusive report from Entertainment Weekly explained why McCarthy went all out with the spoiler before season 3 premiered, and she also talked about that storyline.

The executive producer told Entertainment Weekly that she "wanted people to get used to it — there was no way around it in the storytelling."

"We've done shocking deaths and that's not the tone of this story," McCarthy added.

The way Francis will die will be much different compared to the shocking exits featured in the past seasons of the series.

Now that fans know of Francis' fate, they will be more prepared to handle the upcoming episodes and will be given a chance to bid a heartbreaking farewell to the character.

McCarthy explained in the exclusive report that she revealed the spoiler early on because she doesn't want Francis' death to shock fans. In fact, she promised that Regbo and his character will be given a proper exit from the show.

Francis' death is not much of a surprise — it was a storyline that has been discussed many times inside the writers' room, the executive producer revealed.

The king's death has already been incorporated even from the previous season; actor Regbo also knew beforehand that his character will die, but it was just a matter of knowing when — and it appears that the time will happen anytime soon.

With this knowledge, "Reign" fans will only have to wait for that episode when Francis finally makes his exit and obviously, it will be a sad day for them.

"Reign" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
