Blizzard Entertainment once again took the whole gaming industry by storm after its shooter game "Overwatch" was released in May 2016. But like other titles, it also has its own drama to share. Today, the studio is facing controversy for asking a huge amount of money just to sign teams to the game's league.
According to ESPN, Blizzard is having a hard time signing teams for the Overwatch League because players are hesitant to do so. This is due to the fact that the entry fee is just way too big. The video game company is reportedly asking each team a whopping $20 million. Apparently, this price even becomes higher in bigger markets such as Los Angeles and New York.
Add to this the fact that these teams are unlikely to acquire profit until 2021. If they decide to sell their teams to another entity, the league will reportedly take 25 percent of the overall transaction. It is safe to say that Blizzard is fond of working with buyers — if, and only if — it is on a case-by-case basis. Obviously, not everyone is on the same page as the studio.
The owner of the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft, is an example. It is true that he already has a tentative agreement in terms of purchasing a team. However, if he is to do it, he wants the prices to match the most reasonable price that anyone in the Overwatch League will buy in for.
Destructoid notes that Blizzard, without a doubt, has its own issues to deal with involving the league. Ironically, the studio does not seem to mind, as it plans to move forward with it later this year. However, there are those who believe that it is very unlikely for the league to exist given the situation it is facing now.
