The new season of "New Girl" is just full of surprises that showrunner Liz Meriwether admits that it's time that the characters grow to become a bit more mature.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Meriwether pointed out that the characters are "not good at being adults." This is in reference to what happened in the premiere episode on Tuesday, where everything goes wrong at a party that Jess (Zooey Deschanel) had organized.

For starters, Nick (Jake Johnson) picked up the wrong person intended to perform at the event, while Jess' energetic performance resulted to her injury. What's worse is that when CeCe's (Hannah Simone) mom, Mrs. Parekh (Anna George), makes an appearance at the party without knowing beforehand that her daughter is already engaged, she immediately thinks that Schmidt (Max Greenfield) is just not good for CeCe.

The episode ended with Mrs. Parekh not giving her blessings to the couple. But that's not a problem because Meriwether teased fans that the wedding is happening this season.

"The bond that they have with each other is really strong and there's an amazing kind of love that grows between them this year and as they're preparing for the wedding, their relationship is getting deeper," the showrunner revealed to Entertainment  Weekly.

She continued that the couple will meet some challenges while they are still engaged. Since CeCe's mom doesn't approve of her daughter's plans to marry, the couple might face some financial issues along the way, particularly with the budget for their wedding.

Still, Meriwether assures that CeCe and Schmidt will pull through. She said, "But for all the problems that they face putting the wedding together, their relationship just keeps getting stronger. They've had enough drama as a couple over the years."'

As for the rest of the characters, Meriwether said that they need to grow up as adults. It starts from CeCe and Schmidt making a big decision in their life and hopefully the characters will follow to take steps into adulthood.

But Meriwether insisted that "New Girl" characters are just who they are — "not good at being adults."

Catch the new season of "New Girl" every Tuesday at 8 p.m. EST on FOX.
