"Mr. Robot's" first season left fans wanting more from the story that was considered a surprise hit series this year. What's next for USA Network's critically-acclaimed series?

Series creator Sam Esmail recently did an interview with Entertainment Weekly to talk about his plans for "Mr. Robot." It was revealed that the show could only last up to five seasons.

"I still stick to four or five. The problem is that our episodes are really long sometimes. I always have to recalibrate," the showrunner shared. He also added that the show will definitely not exceed five seasons.

Esmail also mentioned that he already has an ending in mind but doesn't have a concrete outline. What's certain is that when he started with the feature, he already knows how it's going to end and he's now "building the story toward that ending."

Esmail is determined not to make "Mr. Robot" such a long series that it would eventually see its ratings drop or get cancelled.

"I really wanted the narrative to have a purpose," he said. "For me, the utmost importance is having a clear narrative engine and a clear ending that we're moving toward."

With season 1 wrapping up by revealing the identity of Mr. Robot, it is expected that season 2 will revolve around Elliot's (Rami Malek) life. Esmail revealed to The Hollywood Reporter in September that there will be a backstory for most of season 2 to dig deeper into Elliot's past, the therapy sessions and his family history.

The show will explore more about the character's past "in the next few seasons" because it will influence how Elliot will deal with his demons.

"Mr. Robot" is expected to return sometime in July 2016. The show recently won the Gotham Awards for Breakthrough Series and was named as one of the winners for Best TV Programs of the Year in the AFI Awards.
