Moto Z Play release date: leak gives away midranger's specs

A smartphone believed to be the Moto Z Play made an appearance at Geekbench, where its specs were exposed including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor.

It was also revealed during its visit there that the Moto Z Play will come with 3GB RAM and not 2GB RAM, which previous reports claim. It also runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Moto Z Play was expected to be announced alongside the Moto Z and Moto Z Force a little over a week ago. Lenovo hasn't spoken about the smartphone's glaring absence.

The Moto Z Play is reportedly still in production, and was previously rumored to come with a 5.5-inch Full HD display, a sleek look and a body that's razor thin at an impressive 5.99mm.

In the imaging department, users are looking at a 16-megapixel (MP) rear-facing shooter and a 5MP selfie snapper. The shooters will feature what is being called the Pro Camera Mod.

This should provide 10x optical zoom, f/3.4-5.6 aperture and a Xenon flash. With the Pro Camera Mod, the Moto Z Play, or any Moto Z device for that matter, can double as a digital camera.

The smartphone is also expected to have a 3,600 mAh battery in tow and 16GB storage, wrapping up the midrange package of the Moto Z Play.

The handset is also expected to be waterproof, thanks to an all-new accessory dubbed as the Adventure Mod, which Lenovo appears to be perfecting for now.

Seeing that the Moto Z Play is actually is a cheaper version of the Moto Z line, all of this certainly sounds amazing for what is imagined would be a budget-friendly price tag.

There's no word on when the Moto Z Play will be launched, but it is expected it will be made official anytime now. Its brothers, the Moto Z and Moto Z Force, will be up for sale this September.

Apart from the Moto Z Play, an unannounced Motorola device believed to be the Moto X 2016 was also leaked.
