'Metal Gear Survive' release date: lukewarm reaction from fans, title speculated to launch next year

"Metal Gear Survive" is expected to arrive by 2017. Konami

"Metal Gear Survive" was announced during Gamescom 2016. Developer Konami stated the upcoming game is "a new addition to the Metal Gear Solid V experience," but fans are taking the game as something else. It is not a "Metal Gear" series game, they said.

The newly announced game has gotten mixed reactions from "Metal Gear" fans. Reports suggest that many fans are not thrilled with the upcoming multiplayer stealth game, stating that it has veered away from what the game is known for. There are also fans who believe that the game series will never be the same without its franchise creator, Hideo Kojima, who after many years parted ways with the developer in a not-so-good way.

VG247 mentioned that fans who have taken their reaction online via Twitter and Reddit reacted negatively toward the upcoming game. The game is a spin-off since it will be going into a different timeline, like "Metal Gear Acid" and "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance," but, "this isn't 'Metal Gear Sold," one fan said.

Konami revealed that "Metal Gear Survive" takes place after the bomb at the end of "Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes." Its teaser trailer also showed that a wormhole materialized at the Mother Base and transported all the soldiers into a zombie-infested area. IGN added that is a "survival done the Metal Gear way."

Meanwhile, Robert Allan Peer, Konami's online community manager, is already doing some sort of damage control for the next project. Peer has been replying to the fans' questions and comments and very well understands the situation at hand when he replied "the game needs to prove itself for sure" to one of the fans on Twitter.

The upcoming game will be powered by the FOX engine, which was used in the previous installments of "Metal Gear Solid V." Fans can also expect more information on the spin-off game in the months to come.

"Metal Gear Survive" is due for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC in 2017.
