'Marco Polo' season 3 renewal still possible?

 (Netflix)

More than a month after Netflix dropped the second season of "Marco Polo," viewers of the show are still waiting to hear about the fate of the historical drama series.

Speculations claim that actor Benedict Wong opted not to reprise his role as Kublai Khan in the series. According to rumors, the actor was disappointed with all the negative reviews about the series, prompting him to quit the show after season 2.

However, series creator John Fusco seemed to have debunked the said rumors when he posted on Twitter a still photo of a scene that features Kublai Khan and Hundred Eyes (Tom Wu), with the caption: "We're not done, Monk. Me and you, we're not done."

Ecumenical News revealed that several speculations claim that Wong might still remain on the show after the second season, but in a limited capacity due to the possible storyline of season 3. According to rumors, the story for the possible season will focus more on the back story of Prester John, the ruler of a Nestorian Christian nation. The character had been mentioned in some of the books featuring Marco Polo.

Other rumors speculate that the possible cancellation of "Marco Polo" season 3 will be caused by the show's high production cost.

According to reports, the historical drama series is one of the most expensive shows on the entertainment streaming service provider because it costs millions of dollars to finish. It also takes a long time to create one season, since the gap between the first and second one took one year and a half.

If Netflix will order a third season for "Marco Polo" in the coming days, the series is expected to be released by the streaming service provider by fall or early winter of 2017.

"Poldark" season 2 premieres on Sunday, Sept. 4.
