'Humans' season 1: Introducing Anita

Anita is taken out of her plastic shell, in AMC's Human Facebook/ HumansAMC

"Humans," the British-American science fiction TV series, premiered this month on the U.K.'s Channel 4 and AMC, and the first episode aired in the U.S. on Sunday, June 28.

The show opens up sometime in the future with busy man of the house Joe Hawkins, who is tired of cleaning up at home while his wife Laura is away on a work trip. Inspiration strikes, so Joe goes shopping with his little girl Sophie and decides to buy a very pretty Synth — a robotic assistant. The salesman tells him that this is the best thing that he will ever do for his family, and if he's not satisfied with the Synth, he can return it within 30 days, no questions asked. The Synth is freed from her plastic case, and Joe has her drive him and Sophie home.

Upon arriving home, Joe shows off the Synth to his children, and warns his teenage daughter Mattie not to tinker with it, while his teenage son Toby looks at the Synth with interest.

Laura arrives from her work trip, and instantly she knows that something is off when she sees that the house is perfectly spotless. She tells Joe that it's not right and that it will confuse the kids, who have already named the Synth Anita.

Anita proves to be quite indispensable, much to Laura's discomfort. Even Mattie seems to be quite annoyed with her as she tells her parents that there's no point in her going to medical school — within seconds, any Synth can be turned into a brain surgeon.

Elsewhere, Dr. George Millican is being offered an upgrade on his Synth by his case worker. But he doesn't want the upgrade — a stern-looking Synth named Vera — to replace his Synth named Odi because he helps him remember bits of his past, which has slipped from him ever since he had a stroke. Even though Odi is malfunctioning and may pose a danger to George and to other people, George wants to keep him because he can recall memories of his late wife.

Meanwhile, Leo is trying to get his Synths back. In a flashback to five weeks earlier, Anita is seen walking through the woods with Leo when they're dragged into a car by an assailant.

At the Hawkins' house, Anita is seen carrying a sleeping Sophie and taking her out of the house.

Next week, Laura gets increasingly impatient with Anita, Mattie is caught tampering with one of the school Synths, George hides Odi from his case worker, and an acquaintance tells Leo that Anita's system has been wiped — she now has a new personality.

"Humans" airs on Sundays at 9 /8c on AMC.
