'Gravity Falls' Season 3 renewed or canceled latest news: No new season, but crossover with 'Rick and Morty' a possibility

Fans of Disney's "Gravity Falls" were heart broken after the confirmation that a third season of the animated television series will not be developed.

Alex Hirsch, creator of the Emmy Award-winning series, previously shared a post on his Tumblr account regarding the show's end.

"The first thing to know is that the show isn't being cancelled- it's being finished. This is 100% my choice, and its something I decided on a very long time ago. I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end."

Hirsch went on to say that he did not want the show to carry on for so long that it starts to lose its spark, like many shows that have. The surprise hit, after all, has received critical acclaim for its originality.

On the other hand, the Internet is buzzing with claims that a crossover between "Gravity Falls" and "Rick and Morty" is happening. "Rick and Morty" is another animated series that airs on Adult Swim. Hirsch and "Rick and Morty" creator Justin Roiland are friends, with both of them even voicing characters in each other's shows.

Fans have also noted many similarities between the two shows, and even discovered some easter eggs along the way. When asked by Entertainment Weekly on a possible crossover, however, Hirsch was unclear in his response.

"I remember when I was a kid, whenever you'd see cartoons cross over with each other, it always ranged from a delightful, magical surprise to a cynical, annoying cash grab. So far, we've found that these little winking nods between our shows strike the right balance. I can't say whether or not there will be more, but I can say that we like to confuse and amuse people so who the hell knows."

Fans will have to wait and see whether Hirsch ultimately decides to push through with the crossover. For now, they will have to settle for the show's finale, "Weirdmageddon III," which is expected to air early next year.
