Next year will see the release of "Gears of War 4" and fans of the franchise can barely keep their cool. It's been nearly a decade since the first "Gears of War" title was released, and it looks like game developer The Coalition isn't ready to hang its coat just yet.

Movie Pilot previously roused up fans when they declared "Gears of War 4" to be far better and more exciting than "Halo 5." Kenny McDonnell, a member of the site's staff, had the honor of attending Gamescom, an expo held in Köln, Germany. He found that "Halo 5" failed to impress, but "Gears of War 4," on the other hand, looked stunning.

So what exactly does "Gears of War 4" have under its belt? Apparently, the game is going back to its roots.

Rod Fergusson, the studio head assigned to The Coalition's "Gears of War" franchise, was able to speak with IGN about the upcoming game.

"We're going back to something personal, intimate, dark, and mysterious, being afraid of the boogeyman," the Canadian video game producer explained.

If there's one thing that fans don't like, it's rehashing the same storyline over and over again. But thankfully, "Gears of War 4" will bring something new to the table.

"The stories have changed a lot from 10 years ago. Back in the day people expected stories to be black and white, there's good and bad. Today, people want a lot of grey, a lot moral ambiguity, things that are open to interpretation about what's right and wrong," Fergusson added.

The game's predecessor, "Gears of War 3," was not made available for Xbox One or PC, which disappointed many players. But recent reports have claimed that "Gears of War 4" will be available on the Xbox 360 console, as well as Xbox One and PC.

The speculation stems from a listing that a British video games retailer called GAME released, which marked "Gears of War 4" as being available for Xbox One and PC, according to Tech Times. The publication does, however, indicate that it's possible that the inclusion was simply an error.

"Gears of War 4" is slated to be released in 2016.
