Father of the Bride sequel to have gay plot? Steve Martin says he hasn't seen script

American journalist Nikki Finke got tongues wagging on Sunday when she reported that a third Father of the Bride instalment was in the works nearly a quarter of a century after the original landed on the big screen.

The former Deadline.com Editor-in-Chief claimed in the short piece on her own website that Warner Bros were sorting out the rights to Father of the Bride 3.

She said Charles Shyer were lined up to write and direct the film, and that Steve Martin, who played dad George Banks, would also be returning.

What's more, Finke said the plot would revolve around his son Little Matty being all grown up, gay and wanting to marry a Navy SEAL's son.

"Father of the bride George is 'thunderstruck and speechless' and has problems with the whole gay thing," she reported.

"So wife Nina kicks him out of the house, according to the pitch which Disney loved."

Steve Martin has made a career out of dry humour so the tone of his tweets in response to her report shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

He has poured cold water on Finke's claims, insisting he has not been offered any role in the supposed project.

"So excited to read I'm doing Father of the Bride 3 since I haven't seen a script or been offered the role!" he tweeted.

The tweet was updated to Finke's original article but with no additional comment from the reporter.

Father of the Bride may have been out in 1991 but it remains a movie favourite and was followed up by a 1995 sequel.  A Father of the Bride 3 would no doubt delight fans of the previous two.

Shyer wrote the scripts for the first two instalments, which were directed by Nancy Meyers.

The 1991 version was a remake of the 1950 film starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor about a dad who struggles to let go of his betrothed daughter.
