Season 2 of the critically acclaimed anthology series, "Fargo," has just ended. But it looks like fans need to occupy themselves for a while because the show will reportedly take more than a year to develop and complete season 3.

Since "Fargo" is primarily set in the winter, there is not enough time in the current season to shoot a year's worth of footage. For this reason, season 3 of the black comedy crime drama series will premiere in 2017. The third season will reportedly take place in a new location and have an entirely new cast to back it up.

At a Q&A with the press, creator Noah Hawley revealed that none of the season 1 characters will return for season 3 as leads. He explained that the beauty of the original film from which the series of the same name was based on was that it ended, and he intends to take the same direction with the show. The main characters' storylines were concluded in such a satisfying way that to open up another case for them would be a disservice.

However, it's not all bad news. "That's not to say one of our stories might not intersect with characters we've seen before for a certain period of time," Hawley added.

Plot-wise, the third season will deal with more modern topics, since it will be set in 2010 (just four years after the events of the first season).

"It's a more contemporary story, and I think that's exciting. Our first year was set in 2006, but we didn't really deal with what it was like to be in that region in a more contemporary world. I like the idea that we're now living in a very selfie-oriented culture where people photograph what they're eating and put it up for other people to see," Hawley explained.

The writers of "Fargo" are reportedly making sure they break down the storyline as best as they can, with their aim to finish most of the writing before production begins. Hawley, who also serves as the show's executive producer and primary writer, has already written the first episode of season 3.

If the first two seasons are any indication, and with the amount of work they're putting into the upcoming season, it looks like FX has got another hit on its hands.

"Fargo" season 3 will air sometime in 2017.
