A bike accident over the weekend has forced "Perfect" singer Ed Sheeran to cancel some of his upcoming tour dates in Asia. This will affect his shows in Taipei, Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul and Hong Kong.
On his first public appearance after the accident, Sheeran told Reuters at London's Q Awards for music that he broke his wrist, elbow and a rib in the accident.
"I am a bit bruised and broken but I am fine," he said.
The 26-year-old artist first informed his fans of his bike accident on Monday, when he posted a photo showing both his arms in cast and bandage. In the caption, he said this might affect his tour dates but that he was still waiting for medical advice.
On Tuesday, Sheeran confirmed that according to his doctor, he will not be able to do live performances in the next few weeks due to a fracture in his right wrist and left elbow.
"I'm waiting to see how the healing progresses before we have to decide on shows beyond that. Please stay tuned for more details," he captioned.
The two-time Grammy Award-winner is known for playing solo during his concerts. He layers his songs with just a guitar and a loop pedal, with no backup band at all. In 2015, he became the first artist to headline London's Wembley Stadium solo, for three sold-out nights to boot, earning him the moniker "the world's first stadium busker."
In an interview with BBC earlier this year, Sheeran said performing with a backup band was never an option for him, adding that rehearsed performances with a band would make his concerts sound monotonous.
"Whereas with a loop pedal, you're on edge the whole time because it might go wrong in front of 87,000 people — so it makes it more exciting," he explained.
Now, with both his arms unavailable, the rest of his tour dates remain unsure.
Sheeran was to kick off the 14-date Asian leg of his Divide Tour in Taiwan on Oct. 22. It still depends on how soon he heals but fans are hopeful that his sold-out concerts in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, slated before the year ends, will push through. He will then have a three-month hiatus before continuing his tour in Australia in March 2018.
