'Dr. Who' season 9 spoilers, plot rumors: Fans look forward to the Christmas special

"Dr. Who" season 9 will be out in a couple of weeks but it seems that a lot of people are looking to fast forward to the Christmas special instead.

The Christmas special will mark the return of Professor River Song (Alex Kingston). This will mean that the professor will meet the 12th doctor currently being played by Peter Capaldi, which somehow appends the doctor's previous meeting with the tenth (David Tennant) and eleventh (Matt Smith).

Kingston did show some surprise at the reprisal of her role as she was totally clueless on whether or not she would make a return. A call from creator Steven Moffat inviting her to join the Christmas special, of course, answered all of that; although speculations are now wondering if it would be her last or the start of something more roles in the future.

Could it happen?

It will be interesting to see how this materializes, especially considering that Song died in "Forest of the Dead" trying to save Tennant and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). She was last seen in the episode "The Name of the Doctor," appearing as an image in Clara's (Jenna Coleman) consciousness.

So how could Song reappear and would the Christmas special have anything to do with it? Could Song's journal be the key to her return?

The answers to those questions could be months away so for now, let us leave it at that. The immediate interest will be, of course, in the season 9 opening.

Some of the stars of the show did drop some hints (via Mashable), unconfirmed but mostly believed to make sense.

Such include possibly seeing Capaldi regenerate or degenerate, which could indicate possible visits to the past. Could this have any connection to the Christmas special where Song returns?

For now it would be premature to sound off on rumors, seeing that most episodes don't even have titles yet. With Moffat keeping everything under the lid, it will be interesting to see what "Doctor Who" season 9 will offer to its followers when it premieres on Sept. 19.
