'Doctor Strange' movie news: Benedict Cumberbatch introduces D23 presentation

Doctor Strange Marvel/Disney

Benedict Cumberbatch, who will grace the silver screen in less than two years' time as Doctor Strange, made the introduction to Marvel's presentation of the upcoming superhero film via video during Disney's D23 event, which he wasn't able to attend.

"I'm very excited and very lucky to be taking on Doctor Strange," the "Sherlock Holmes" star said in the clip. "He's an extraordinary character and brings in a whole another dimension — multiple dimensions — to the Marvel Universe."

Indeed, "Doctor Strange" will be different from other Marvel movies, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige emphasized that during the event. He was quoted by Vanity Fair as saying that the flick will be "as weird as anything we've done."

The upcoming film will fully embrace its roots which border on supernatural, thanks to the comics' outrageous sci-fi and fantasy nature. That said, this should involve alternate dimensions and magic.

"Doctor Strange" is deemed one of the most powerful sorcerers in existence. The superhero starts out as an extraordinary surgeon named Doctor Stephen Strange, whose hands are so terribly injured in a car accident that he loses the use of them.

He finds himself in the Himalayas where he meets the Ancient One, who is the one to thank for his new abilities. The Ancient One, to be played by Tilda Swinton, trains him until he becomes fit to be called the Sorcerer Supreme, the protector of the planet from transcendent foes from other worlds.

During the D23 event, Marvel showcased a concept art where attendees saw Doctor Strange watching the galaxies and planets move. Cumberbatch said via The Guardian that the movie will feature "girls, cars, explosions and a bit of astro-projecting into multiple dimensions ... the usual fare."

"Doctor Strange" is part of Marvel's Phase Three of films and will be released on Nov. 4, 2016.
